This painting depicts a member of the Trobairitz, or female Troubadours, of the 12th-13th centuries CE. Like their male counterparts, the Trobairitz were travellers and court musicians. The orange-clad figure is loosely based on a contemporary illustration of Beatritz de Dia, whose poems were often set to the flute.
